In many of my other posts, I’ve mentioned my battle with SIBO (small intestine bacteria overgrowth) and the many painful symptoms that come with it. For those with SIBO and any other similar GI issues (bloating, IBS, Crohn’s, etc.) it can be difficult to find foods to help settle flare up or that even settle at all. It can be even harder to find supplements and protein powders for those who workout regularly.
I’ve never liked the idea of supplementing my protein with powders, but since staring med school, I’ve had to completely change my routine and daily habits. I can’t always sit down for a real meal when I want, sleep when I want (if at all!), or exercise nearly as much as I used to. With the added stress, my GI flare-ups were nonstop once school started. I started trying out a new routine every week and researching what would settle my gut.
I heard and read about this clean protein powder made by Nuzest. I usually avoid protein powders because they’re usually made from whey/dairy, which never settles well with me. I’ve tried other vegan brands in the past as well, but so many have other added ingredients that just don’t settle well (instant stomach cramps and bloating). I was desperate and decided to give this one a try based off reviews, their kind and genuine customer service, and extremely clean ingredients.
My stomach can’t handle much in the mornings so I stick to very light foods or plain protein, however, I couldn’t even find to time to make eggs anymore, and if I could, when will I get to eat them?
I started taking Nuzest sample protein packs with me and would dip apples or berries in it, mix it with Apple butter and eat with plain rice cakes, I even added it to baked goods on the weekend to take during the week. Within the first week of trying it, my flare ups not only settled immediately, but they were less frequent. I’m not saying nuzest cured my gut, but I can’t tell you what a relief it was to have found something that keeps me full and actually helps when my stomach would cramp up!
Protein for Overall health:
Everyone’s stomach and overall health needs and dietary preferences are different, but everyone needs some form of protein and in different amounts.
Proteins are used as the building blocks for most major bodily chemicals and processes: hormones, enzymes, muscles, bones, blood, metabolism, glucose regulation, and digestion, just to name a few!
One thing many people don’t always realize is how important an adequate amount of protein is for digestive health. Protein helps with growth and repair throughout the body and also helps boost your metabolism. When it comes to digestion, proteins can help provide your gut with the amino acids your body needs to produce enzymes and repair damaged tissues and cells. Protein helps transport hormones and with cell signaling throughout the body to tell your brain when you’re full and where other nutrients need to be carried.
Keep in mind, it’s always important to get multiple sources of nutrients, especially protein, as they all have different properties and benefits. It’s also important not to overdo it, as with all other foods.
Nuzest:
I truly love this brand and their products! I don’t consume it everyday, but I always like to have it on hand, especially while traveling or on the go.
They have quite a few delicious flavor options to choose from and their base ingredient is a golden pea protein isolate…that’s it!! It’s the cleanest I’ve found compared to all other protein companies and brands. Even their flavored options (which are all delicious!) are very clean/simple.
Here’s the label for their chocolate flavor (my personal favorite): Pea protein isolate, Cocoa Powder, Natural Vanilla Flavor, Cocoa Extract, Fruit Protein isolate

Another thing I love about Nuzest is you don’t get a hard or sore stomach after consuming it like you do with many other proteins. It’s filling, but not too heavy and it makes and excellent flour substitute in recipes without needing much at all!
