Everyone gets run down once in a while, especially during the colder fall and winter months. While antibiotics and over the counter relief medications are an easy go-to, they don’t do your body any favors and half of the time, they don’t offer any relief. Antibiotics might kill off bad bacteria, but they also destroy your beneficial gut bacteria, which is where over 80% of your immune system resides. If your gut and digestive system aren’t in check, chances are you won’t be able to get the rest of your body healthy. Before you reach for a quick fix, try some of these natural alternatives that not only work right away, but they have countless other benefits for your body.
Overall Health, Cold, Flu & Prevention:
Probiotics: These are all the rage in the health and wellness community, but they really do make a huge difference in overall health. Taking a probiotic supplement or powder daily can help boost your immune system and keep your microbiome in check. The traditional western diet rarely incorporates enough probiotics-rich foods like sauerkraut, kefir, miso, tempeh, kimchi, clean or raw dairy & non-dairy yogurts, etc. which is why it’s always good to have the probiotic pills or the powders on hand for traveling and on the go – Golive Probiotic and Prebiotic Supplement Blend, Orange and Tangerine, 0.34oz – 10-Count
Vitamin D: While sun bathing can help improve Vitamin D levels, it doesn’t help provide the Vitamin D needed to support internal systems and your immune system. It’s hard to get too much Vitamin D and is best if taken daily to prevent getting sick and support all other systems – NatureWise Vitamin D3 5,000 IU for Healthy Muscle Function, Bone Health and Immune Support, Gluten Free & Non-GMO in Cold-Pressed Organic Olive Oil,1-year supply, 360 count
Oil of Oregano**: Use this with care and only as needed. It is considered a natural antibiotic and for great reason. It is extremely potent – almost unbearable to consume on its own and even in water. You can smell it from a mile away, but it will kill anything in its path, making it perfect for serious infections or illnesses that shouldn’t require dangerous prescription medications. Both pill and dropper form are available. I highly recommend the pills so you aren’t completely put off by it – Pills:Puritan’s Pride Oil of Oregano Extract 1500 mg-180 Softgels
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)**: This is a hard one for many people to get down and can be a bit rough for those with sensitive stomachs or leaky gut/IBS so only take this if you can stomach it. You can take it straight and get it over with, or dilute it in water with a little lemon or raw honey/liquid sweetener if you’d like. It’s recommended to start with about 1oz or shot glass before meals or just to start the day (I always have to dilute it). It’s great for killing off bacteria and strengthening the immune system. Make sure to get unfiltered that still has the “mother” – Bragg Usda Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, 32 Fluid Ounce
Trace Mineral Complex: These are pretty much what they sound like. Trace minerals are small amounts of various minerals found naturally. They are not as abundant in today’s food supply/sources, which is why it’s good to take supplemental trace minerals usually found in the form of a liquid dropper. Dosages vary depending on which brand or blend you get, but they majority of them contain iron, zinc, magnesium, iodine, chromium, selenium, etc.
These are all crucial for overall cell function, neurological impulses, and nutrient absorption. You’ll find that many of today’s most common health issues such as diabetes, many types of cancer, and heart attach patents are all deficient in many, if not all, of these minerals – Trace Minerals Research – Concentrace Trace Mineral Drops – 8oz
Pain- Muscular, Arthritis & Joint:
Magnesium & Magnesium Oil: I can’t recommend this enough, especially for instant relief. While there are many things you can take to improve joint pain, magnesium is quickly absorbed and delivers almost instant relief. So many people don’t realize how important magnesium is and even fewer get enough of it due to the lack of minerals in today’s food. Magnesium is needed for almost every system in the body and it requires 7 molecules of magnesium to help transport 1 molecule of sugar, which depletes bones of nutrients and causes inflammation so it’s hard to get “too much” magnesium. You can take it in tablet and lotion/oil form for best results – Spray: Life-flo Pure Magnesium Oil, 8 Ounce
Eucalyptus Oil/Elmore’s Oil: These oils have a similar effect to that of magnesium. It’s great for almost instant joint relief, but doesn’t get to the source as well as magnesium. If you don’t have access to eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil also works. Elmore’s oil is a great example of a eucalyptus pain-relief blend that I was introduced to while experiencing back and muscle pain in Australia.
Vitamin D: While this is such a crucial vitamin for the immune system and overall health, it also helps fight inflammation and protect joints. This is another that’s almost impossible to get “too much” of. I personally take a 5,000IU dosage daily just for preventive measures – NatureWise Vitamin D3 5,000 IU for Healthy Muscle Function, Bone Health and Immune Support, Gluten Free & Non-GMO in Cold-Pressed Organic Olive Oil,1-year supply, 360 count
Turmeric: It’s all over the Internet and news that turmeric or “curcumin” is great for fighting inflammation and is often recommend for those experiencing pain. It really is a powerful spice and has so many other health benefits there’s no reason not to take it. While adding it to food can help some people, it often isn’t enough so I also recommend getting a highly concentrated supplement that also contains black pepper, which helps activate turmeric once in the body. It’s also good to take it with a carrier oil or fat (after a meal or with a little coconut oil) to make it more easily absorbed. Here’s my current favorite –
Pills: Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine 1500mg. Highest Potency Available. Premium Pain Relief & Joint Support with 95% Standardized Curcuminoids. Non-GMO, Gluten Free Turmeric Capsules with Black Pepper
Essential Oils: Depending on what type of pain you’re dealing with, lavender and peppermint oils are a couple basic options. Both are great for relaxing muscles and providing a bit of pain relief. Other oils like frankincense and myrrh are also great, ancient remedies used to treat arthritis and muscle spasms, especially when combined. Some companies have their own blends to also help, like doTERRA’s “Deep Blue” blend. Most contain similar ingredients, but all are good just to have on hand to help with other pain such as headaches, bruises and fatigue. Apply directly to skin/affected area, or dilute in lotions or creams – Onepure Aromatherapy Essential Oils Gift Set, 6 Bottles/ 10ml each, 100% Pure& Therapeutic Grade (Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Sweet Orange, Peppermint)
Digestive Discomfort & Relief:
Everyone has days when their digestion is thrown off by things like stress, busy schedule, lack of movement/exercise, travel, sleep, and so much more! So many things can affect your bowel movements and a healthy digestive system is crucial for flushing toxins, eliminating waste, and circulation, just to name a few. There’s nothing more uncomfortable than needing to get back on track. Here’s a few things to help without resorting to painful and unpredictable laxatives that so many people abuse and become reliant on (not to mention the chemicals and dangerous colors added to them).
Oxygen Capsules: One of my favorite supplements! They’re a little expensive, but are a must have as they can be used for so many things and are very safe and beneficial for your body, especially your gut! Oxygen tablets are taken before bed with water. They relieve discomfort, bloating, cramps, and pretty much anything going on in your gut. I currently have SIBO and this is the only thing to offer consistent relief. The bottle recommends 4 pills in the evening before bed, but start with 2 and see how they work for you. I get mine here: http://www.GlobalHealingCenter.com/?a_aid=5896001417115
Aloe: Pure aloe juice not only helps stimulate digestion, it’s amazing for so many other systems and functions in your body. Sip a little bit of pure aloe throughout the day or before bed for digestive relief (serving size is usually 8oz or 1 cup, but I find I only need an ounce or two so use however much works for you) – Lakewood Organic PURE Aloe Inner Leaf Juice, 32-Ounce Bottle
- Senna – Take with caution, especially if using something like Chinese “dieters” tea. Too much can have the same effect as a laxative, so start with 1 cup before bed and see how it affects you.
- Peppermint – Safe and gentle for anyone, any time of day.
- Miracle Tea – I love this tea blend and the company! It really is a miracle tea and can be used for so many different things. It’s great for a good 1-2 week flush of your system to help get you back on track. It’s harmless and makes a great iced-tea, especially with a little raw honey or lemon (it is a little bitter) – MyMiracleTea.com
- Warm lemon water/tea – This is a classic, basic blend, but it works! Try it first thing in the morning if I’m starting off with discomfort, but it’s safe for any time of day.
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE)**: This is a bit of a surprise for many people. Diatoms are small, microscopic particles/creatures in the ocean. They’re a primary food source for krill, shrimp, and almost all, small sea life. They have a rough, razor-like surface and are also used in the garden to help kill or deter pests like aphids and snails. Their sharp surface cuts and kills pests and works similarly when taken internally to help kill or fight bacteria and even many parasites.
Start with ¼ tsp mixed in a glass of warm water first thing in the morning. Use a couple days, then up it to ½ tsp by the end of the week. Take up to 1 tsp every morning by week 2, but it is generally not recommended to take for more than 3 weeks to a month, as it can be harsh on your system when used too much.
Psylium Husk: So many people don’t realize how little fiber they actually get throughout the day. The typical diet is not only void of nutrients, but doesn’t provide nearly enough fiber to support regular, healthy digestion. Psylium husk is an easy addition to all diets, any time of day. Drink first thing in the morning on its own in a full glass of water, just be sure to mix it well and drink it quickly as it expands when wet. This expansion helps flush your system, just continue to drink water throughout the day. It’s also easy to use in baking as an egg replacer, sprinkled on food or as a flour substitute like I use in my High Fiber Paleo Bread.
Cleansing – Food Sickness, Parasites, Allergic Reactions/Sensitivity (gluten, dairy, oils, etc.):
Activated Charcoal: Another great supplement to have on hand for any situation. If you feel like you might have eaten something bad or that will make you sick, take a couple of these as soon as you can to help fight it while it’s still in your gut. Fun Fact: it’s also used as a natural teeth whitener.
Oxygen Capsules: Not only are these great for digestion, they help remove all other impurities after unhealthy meals, overeating, and they’re great to use to help flush parasites! They might not cure you on their own, but they’re needed to make sure your keeping your system clean and flushing out the eggs while you kill them off with other supplements – http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/?a_aid=5896001417115
Colloidal Silver**: Like oil of oregano, this is considered a natural antibiotic because it is potent enough to help fight and kill any bacteria or pathogen, but should not be taken long term as it can stress and/or damage your organs if used too much. A couple weeks or 1 month of use won’t hurt, but avoid taking it more than that in one go. Dosage depends on concentration, so make sure to use as instructed on the dropper/bottle.
Bentonite Clay: This is a great intro to detoxing if you’re new to the idea of flushing out toxins and cleaning out your intestines or colon. Bentonite is a natural clay that binds to heavy metals from food or environmental sources and toxins released by parasites. It “traps” it and flushes it out of the body and is best to take first thing in the morning for best results.
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE)**: Take as described above for digestive discomfort. When used consistently with both Bentonite clay and probiotics, it will help flush your system while killing any foreign invaders in its path. The clay and probiotics helps bind to toxins and rebuild while the DE cuts through the harmful bacteria or parasites.
Probiotics: While probiotics are a great preventative measure, they’re also extremely helpful when trying to rebuild your microbiome or gut. They help flush your system with beneficial bacteria, which is why they’re great to take after any kind of abdominal discomfort or sickness and even more crucial to take during and after antibiotics (if you absolutely need them). Anything over 20 billion CFU’s (colony forming units) is recommended for best results.
